IBS Seed Breakfast

Flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is known as a 'functional gut disturbance' which means that it is a condition associated with abnormal function of the small and large intestine without the presence of visible disease. Quality of life is often significantly impaired by IBS symptoms. Symptoms often include spasm, pain, bloating and erratic bowel habits. The IBS Seed Breakfast is designed to help manage these symptoms, but is safe and highly nutritious and so can be used by anyone to regulate bowel habits. It is ideal for pregnant women as well.

  • 2 dessertspoons of whole (unground) seeds (equal quantities of linseed, pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds)
  • 6-10 almonds
  • 1-2 tspns psyllium hulls
  • 1/2 cup of plain (unsweetened), organic or biodynamic yoghurt with live cultures
  • Grated raw apple; or stewed apple, pears or plum; or mixed berries
  • In winter, add seed and nut mixture, fibre, fruit and yoghurt to cooked oatmeal or rice
  1. Place oatmeal if used and yoghurt in bowl
  2. Grind the seed mix to the consistency of coarse coffee; grind almonds
  3. Do this each morning because once ground, seeds and nuts tend to become rancid very quickly.
  4. Add seeds and psyllium to yoghurt.
  5. Add fruit and serve.

IBS-C: If IBS symptoms are associated with constipation, try adding double the amount of pumpkin seeds when you grind the seeds.

IBS-D: If IBS symptoms are associated with diarrhoea, try adding 1-2 tspns of slippery elm powder to step 4.

IBS herbal tea

  • Equal quantities of lemon balm, chamomile and peppermint infused in teapot or plunger (1-2 teaspoons per cup)
  • Drink 1–2 cups between each meal

Possible IBS triggers

  • Stimulants such as tea, coffee and cola drinks
  • Wheat fibre as in cereals made from 100 per cent bran
  • Laxatives
  • Fried food, pastry, cream and ice-cream
  • Yeast breads
  • Refined sugar; foods and drinks containing sugar
  • More than one standard drink of alcohol daily
